Sorting Sinkers
10th Nov 2025
As part of our Titanic topic, the pupils took on an exciting STEM challenge. First, they predicted whether classroom objects would float or sink and then they carried out the test. There was a lot of discussion and predictions made before testing out each object which the pupils loved! Using the plan, do, review approach, pupils then designed and created their own “unsinkable” boats from tinfoil. They had to test out the buoyancy of their creation by placing as much cargo (coins)onto the boat before it sank. This hands on activity explored displacement and density, just like how the Titanic, made of heavy steel, was able to float. This experiment encouraged team work, problem solving and creativity and the pupils throughly enjoyed putting their ideas to the test!
